| For
the last couple
of weeks the
world has been
looking to
Mexico with
surprise, indignation
and amusement after the
major
international news
agencies started
to spread the
word about the
violations of
several
fundamental
human rights in
Tecate. Human
rights- and
GLBT-activists
throughout the
world have been
alerted and
reacted with
disbelief and
outrage.
Besides, Tecate has
reached fame in
every corner of
the world, as
the sleepy
provincial nest
somewhere in a
desert where the
police does not
have better
things to do
than running
after crossdressers
(Fortunatly
Mexico is a
stable and
peaceful society
without much
criminality...).
Until now,
with the
exception of
presidential
elections,
indigenous
uprisings or
major earth
quakes hardly
any Mexican news
story has ever
reached
international
media coverage
and interest on
this scale. The
story reached
newspapers even
in places like
South Africa and
Taiwan. What is your

El
par de semanas más
recientes, el mundo ha
contemplado México con
sorpresa, indignación y
algo de suspicacia,
luego de que las
principales agencias de
noticias internacionales
dieron a conocer sobre
las violaciones a varios
derechos humanos
fundamentales en Tecate.
Activistas pro- derechos
humanos y GLBT de todo
el mundo han sido
alertados y han
reaccionado con muestras
de incredulidad y
ultraje. Además, Tecate
ha alcanzado fama a todo
lo ancho y largo del
planeta como un lugar en
provincia donde en el
medio del desierto la
policía no tiene
mejores cosas que hacer
que perseguir personas
travestidas
(Afortunadamente,
México es una sociedad
estable y pacífica, sin
gran criminalidad...)
Hasta
el momento, con
excepción de las
elecciones
presidenciales, los
levantamientos
indígenas o los
temblores de tierra,
había sido difícil que
cualquier noticia sobre
México alcanzara la
cobertura en los medios
de comunicación
internacional y el
interés a gran escala.
La historia alcanzó
diarios del planeta,
entre los que se cuentan
de Sudáfrica y Taiwán.
