As I awoke in the morning, I watched the news on TV. It was in itself incredible that a place I have visited--New York and the World Trade Center in particular--were being damaged. At first the news report said that it was an “accident,” and all of a sudden there I could see the second plane crashing in front of all of us around the world. It was all clear. I felt as if the planes were hitting not just the buildings nor just the flesh and blood of people but the heart of many of us who around the world consider New York to be the place of birth of the contemporary gay movement as well as a symbol that all the countries, all the nationalities, all the languages, all the sexual preferences, all the political points of view, all the religions can live together in peace and harmony. So it was not just an attack on “democracy” and on “civilization,” but a real show of madness and evil. I thank God that my friends in New York and Washington are OK, but I am sure that many, many people are suffering not just because they were “hurt” or “injured” by the most inhumane of cowards but because from now on America will develop in a different kind of relationship with the rest of the world and within its borders. It was incredible how much anger, hate, impotence, and many more feelings you can feel even when you are at a huge distance like Mexico City. Immediately I tried to get in touch with some of my friends in the Big Apple but there were no lines available, all I could do was send mails, as all of a sudden even the news agencies sites were closed. I needed to wait and wait until, just today {Saturday], I have gotten the last of my friends’ mails saying they are OK. That Tuesday, as part of “Los Martes de
El Taller”--an activity at El Taller, a gay disco-bar in Mexico City--we
dedicated that night to all the victims in those unspeakable events. God
will save America, and I pray to God that the madmen who orchestrated the
attacks will get what they deserve.
