From the Myth of the Seed and the Soil to Myth of Romantic Love

I believe, a mentality based on a principle of division, literally, deforms reality by presenting two different and distinct spheres, such as sacred and profane, pure and filthy, romantic love and sexuality and mind and body. I suggest that this mentality could also be traced in Western sexual identity constructions despite attempting to change the worldwide conservative perception of sexuality through examples of (straight or gay) romantic love narrations.

The procreation myth of the seed and the soil can be seen in various cultures, religions and the peoples of the world. However, the meaning attributed to this procreation myth varies completely from modern to archaic societies. In the archaic societies, the metaphor of the active seed inseminating the passive soil was just a repetition of a sacred act performed by the gods. In these cultures, this myth did not mean and lead to hierarchic positionings or organizations in the society.

On the other hand, the monotheistic religions accepted this very same procreation myth, however, attributing the dichotomy of the mind and the body to it. Therefore, the monotheistic myth of the seed and the soil reflects the inherent oppositional structure of the patriarchal system by rendering the male with creativeness and the female with receptiveness and organizing the whole cosmos through a division of activity and passivity. The metaphor begins to dominate all mentality as the very core of human life is interpreted in a binary oppositional term.

Therefore, every phase of human life, every kind of institutional practice or even every kind of interpretation of life itself begins to be –more and more- subject to the division of the mind and the body. The subjection of the overruling mentality to a ‘division’ (which Bourdieu says is the deformation of vision, as it divides the whole, as the vision is deformed afterwards) indicates a lack in human life.

Through this principle of division, mind and body remain seperate from one another, suffering with the lack and trying to overcome this lack through various desires. The principle of division also rules over the public and private life. The former binary opposition of the seed and the soil reveals itself in a modern ‘narrative discourse’ which is now romantic love. As the mind deserves the sacred place opposed to the body having a profane space, romantic love reserves the sacredness whereas the sexuality is the profane side of the dichotomy. Hence the hierarchy between the mind and the body continues to exist although we face a global sexualization process based on the western sexual identity construction.

Hence I claim that in our global world, although there occurs a relative freedom towards the body and sexuality in both cognition and in practice, sexuality is still positioned as the opposite of a sacred love as many romantic narratives indicate. For instance, lately, there has been great tolerance towards homosexuality and the rights of gay people mostly depicted in gay movies having a romantic love relationship at the core. I believe that they also reproduce the inherent oppositional structure of the patriarchal system in which sexuality is a site which should be under the domination of a romantic love, otherwise it remains to be ‘filthy’ and a ‘profane’ attempt.
