Support our knowledge diffusion projects
What is
Enkidu?
Enkidu is a non-profit
organization based in Mexico City dedicated to the task of Opening
Eyes through information, debate and dialogue. We are building
bridges and breaking silences all over the Spanish speaking world
and increasingly beyond through our online publication Enkidu
Magazine – www.enkidumagazine.com
- and our academic and cultural diffusion activities.
What do we do?
Enkidu provides a complete
news service in Spanish on the internet with daily updated coverage
of a wide variety of themes from a global perspective; human rights,
civil rights, history, international politics, health, religion and
society to mention a few. Our magazine is read by more than 35.000
individuals every month and we have registered readers in more than
40 countries. Approximately 1/3 of our readers are located in
Mexico. Enkidu Magazine entertains and enlightens our readers but we
never loose sight of the bigger issue: We try to make the world a
tiny bit better by sharing knowledge and making objective, academic
and serious information accessible to all. We let our readers all
over the world feel “el poder de saber”, the power of knowing.
Academic Activism: The Power of
Knowing
Enkidu is entirely produced by a small team of dedicated contributors and
volunteers sharing a vision, an ambition, and the idea that high
quality knowledge and information should be available and accessible
to all, regardless of geography and socio-cultural conditions.
Enkidu is more than anything academic activism. An important
element in our work is to make information, research and knowledge
available to the general public in Latin America, which is not
published by mainstream media nor made accessible in Spanish.
Activists, scientists and organisations in Latin America often lack
the capacity to access information in English and Enkidu contributes
through its efforts to make international research available and
accessible to a Spanish speaking audience. The backbone of our
activities is our academic conference projects. Our conferences
bring together scientists, activists, artists and other highly
interesting individuals from all over the world to debate, dialogue
and lively intellectual exchange.
Through
our bilingual conferences, treating a wide variety of topics, we
promote and stimulate academic exchange between researchers,
activists, government agencies and organisations from all over the
world. After the success of our first conference, Enkidu has
decided that every December, we will organise a conference with the
title “Aids in Culture”. Last year, this conference was
organised in Mexico City. In 2005, the conference will be held in
Puerto Vallarta in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
In 2004,
AIDS in Culture I had 52 participants representing a wide range of
academic disciplines as well as artists, activists and other highly
interesting individuals who shared their research, their art, their
visions and their ideas with each other in a stimulating
multilingual academic environment with plenary meetings and round
table discussions. 14 different universities from Latin America,
North America, Europe and Africa were represented as well as two
government agencies and 5 NGO’s. We expect 75 participants at AIDS
in Culture II and a similar number of participants for Competing
Diversities.
How will we use your
donation?
Your donations will this year in
particular contribute to the implementation of Enkidu Magazine’s
conference AIDS and CULTURE II in Puerto Vallarta in December 2005,
as well as our conference "Competing Diversities" to be
held in Mexico City in June 2005 addressing the issue of traditional
sexualities in encounter with modern Western sexual identity
constructions.
Our academic conferences bring
together scientists, activists, artists and other highly interesting
individuals from all over the world to debate, dialogue and lively
intellectual exchange. By giving a donation to Enkidu, you
will contribute to enable participants, in particular from the third
world, without funds but with an important message to the world to
attend our conferences and academic exchange programs and let their
voices be heard.
 |
Another project our team is
planning, which also depends on YOUR donation for its
implementation, is the development of Aids information in
Nahuatl and later other Latin American indigenous
languages in cooperation with internationally acknowledged
scientists as well as indigenous educators and activists in
Europe and Latin America. |
It is our goal to have a new complete
information package in a different indigenous language ready for
publication every year. A donation to Enkidu will secure that this
important work, which has been sadly neglected by the authorities in
most Latin American countries. will continue. Linguistic and
cultural background should not be a barrier to participate in the
"power of knowing" and be part of the global diversity.
We rely 100% on voluntary donations
from our individual readers, organizations, and enterprises that
allow us to continue our academic activism. If you feel that our
efforts are worthwhile and that our voice should continue to be
heard, inform and educate people globally, please consider making a
donation. Being a non profit initiative based in a third world
country, we are always in need of support -moral and financial- from
people like you, from around the world. We accept contributions of
any size, in any currency.
