Exhibition in the II Queer Studies Easter Symposium.

On the edge

Christian Mieves

Oil on ceramic tiles

The exhibition will showcase recent paintings, which deal, like much of his recent work, with boundary crossing and a working through of the idea of in-between spaces. By focusing on liminal, remote spaces such as beaches, Mieves’s paintings use the ‘exotic’ image of the shore as an arena to explore the boundaries between land and sea, the concrete and abstract spheres and that place where new and foreign agents first appear.

The landscapes shown in the paintings appear both familiar and foreign at the same time; they examine the relationship, therefore, between the indigenous and exogenous, casting that relationship in a new and uncanny light and bringing the outside inside.

Mieves’s work serves not only to undo the dichotomy of self and other, but to place the viewer in an ambiguous relation with that representation.

About the artist

Christian Mieves trained in Germany and the UK. In 2005 he completed his MFA, funded by the AHRC at Newcastle University. He is currently undertaking a PhD in Fine Art at Newcastle University, also funded by the AHRC.
